Michy Batshuayi's World Cup Place in Jeopardy with Season-Ending Injury

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that an untimely injury has ended Michy Batshuayi's season, but he remains in contention for World Cup duty.

Batshuayi had to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher towards the end of Dortmund's Ruhr derby loss to rivals Schalke in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

The 24-year-old's season is likely to be over while there will also be concern he could miss the World Cup as Roberto Martinez's side begin their campaign in two months' time.

A statement from the Bundesliga club read: "Michy Batshuayi suffered an ankle injury in the derby with Schalke and will be probably be out of action for the remainder of the season". However, he could still recover in time for the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

"I didn't think it looked like the kind of injury that he would be back from quickly; I hope, of course, that I'm mistaken", Dortmund manager Peter Stoge told press on Monday. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks'.

Batshuayi joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in January and has had an explosive impact in German football.

The injury has come at a terrible time for Batshuayi, with his spot in Belgium's World Cup squad under threat if he can not recover in time.

Batshuayi is playing on loan at Borussia Dortmund where he has lit up the Signal Iduna Park, netting seven times in 9 appearances.
