Russian Federation calls chemical attack in Syria a 'fabrication'

In response to the alleged poison gas attack in the town of Douma that killed dozens of civilians last week, the strike was aimed at cutting off chemical weapons production in Syria.

Lavrov said Russian Federation had "irrefutable information that it was another fabrication, and intelligence agencies of a state that is now striving to spearhead a Russophobic campaign were involved in that fabrication".

After a crunch meeting with national security advisers on Thursday, the White House said he had not yet decided how to retaliate to last week's suspected chemical attack which the US, France and Britain blame on Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"We have information indicating Russian intelligence service interest in the Skripals, dating back at least as far as 2013, when email accounts belonging to Yulia Skripal were targeted by GRU cyber specialists", he said, referring to Russia's foreign military intelligence agency.

But relations have instead soured over mounting evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, Russia's alleged poisoning of a former double agent in Britain and Putin's support of Assad's government in Syria.

The strikes have come after a week-long global push to punish the Assad regime after images and videos emerged on April 7 suggesting civilians - including children - had suffered a chemical attack in Douma.

Russia's denial that the Assad government was responsible for the chemical weapons attack, further angered Trump, one of the USA officials said.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov upped the diplomatic ante earlier in the day Friday when he called the allegations of a Syrian chemical attack a "fabrication" by British intelligence.

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", Moscow's United Nations ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said on Thursday.

He noted that the Russian and U.S. militaries have a hotline to prevent incidents, adding that it's not clear if it would be sufficient amid mounting tensions.

Russian Federation has been deeply enmeshed in Syria's civil war since 2015 and Washington and Moscow have already indirectly clashed in the country.

A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to arrive in Douma on Saturday.

"The sole thing that they have an interest in is to oust the Syrian government and to deter, contain the Russian Federation", he added.

In France, Macron claimed in a TV interview he had "proof" that Assad's regime had used chemical weapons and vowed a response "in due course". It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials of victims.

"The capital of a sovereign government, trying for years to survive under terrorist aggression, has been attacked".

The US president claimed that the joint action was meant to establish a "strong deterrent" against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons.
