Surat minor rape victim from Odisha? State SPs asked to gather information

"She had 86 external injuries on her body", Civil Hospital forensics head Ganesh Govekar said, adding that a wooden weapon was used to cause most of the injuries.

Odisha's Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma told reporters that all the superintendents of police (SPs) in his state have been asked to collect data on missing girls in their district after the Surat Police informed his force they suspect the rape and murder victim was from Odisha.

The minor girl, whose body was found 10 days ago with signs of rape and torture, may have originally hailed from Odisha, a Gujarat minister said on Monday amid intensified efforts by the police to establish her identity. She was kept inside a temple in Rasana village where the accused, who include temple official and policemen, sedated and gangraped her for several days before strangulating her to death and dumping the body in a nearby forest. "Samples have been taken for forensic test to ascertain whether she was drugged or not".

Even as the nation mourns the eight-year-old in Kathua who was drugged and raped repeatedly before being murdered, a similar incident has been reported in Surat.

Appealing people for help, the Surat city Police Commissioner Satish Sharma had said that over 1200 posters pasted across Surat and trains to identify the girl. The top cop said photos and details of the deceased girl have been sent to all SP offices across the state for identification. Have announced reward of Rs 20,000 for anyone providing information about the victim or her family. It was found that the girl was raped, tortured for eight days, and later killed.

Her body was recovered on Friday, April 6, by the side of a highway.

He said police have registered this case of rape and also booked the unidentified alleged person under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The rapes and murders in Kathua and Unnao have sparked shock and outrage across the country with the BJP being accused of trying to shield the accused in both cases.
