BC-AS-Australia-Shark Attack, 1st Ld-Writethru, 265 Surfer mauled by shark swims to shore despite leg injuriesEds: Adds detail and witness accountA surfer mauled by a shark off southwest Australia managed to swim to shore despite serious injuries to both of his legs, an official and a witness said.

The Margaret River Pro global surfing competition which is taking place nearby has been put on hold while organisers wait for information from local authorities.

A spokesman from the ambulance service said the victim was breathing and conscious on the way to Royal Perth hospital.

His attack came just hours after the first victim - 37-year-old father Alejandro Travaglini - was flown to Perth via RAC Rescue helicopter.

Former champion surfer Mick Fanning escaped unscathed when a great white attacked his board as he waited to catch a wave. "After that it was hard to see what was going on".

Jovic said everyone was "walking around like stunned mullets" after the attack. "They got him to shore and started working on him to stem the bleeding".

The attack prompted the World Surf League to postpone the nearby Margaret River Pro global surfing contest.

Beach closures are in place around Gracetown including North Point, Big Rock and Left Handers and fisheries officers are monitoring the area.

With all eyes on the nearby contest at Margaret River, WSL officials made a decision to put the event on hold-and considering Mick Fanning's close call at the J-Bay Open in 2015, it seems like a good call. "We are placing the Margaret River Pro on hold while we work with local authorities on next steps".

A surfer was killed by a shark at Gracetown in 2013.

At 10am, the WSL said the competition would resume as normal.

According to The West Australian, John John and Nathan Florence encountered two large sharks during a free surf in the days leading up the Margaret River Pro.

"Typically we have three or four in the water dedicated to surfer safety and also to our shark safety protocol and we've stepped that up now, we've actually got seven in the line-up and we've increased our drone presence to two".
