US House Speaker Ryan Says He Won't Run for Re-Election

In their failed effort to overhaul the Affordable Care Act in 2017 Republicans, led by Ryan in the House, set their sights on not just rolling back the health law's expansion of Medicaid but also turning it into a block grant program.

The Wisconsin Republican cast the decision to end his 20-year career as a personal one - he doesn't want his children growing up with a "weekend dad" - but it will create a vacuum at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Democrats are seeking to regain control of Congress from Mr Trump's fellow Republicans in the mid-term elections. If Trump endorses McCarthy for the job, as McCarthy allies think he would, the president's sway with conservatives could help seal the deal.

Ryan expressed gratitude for having served as leader of the House Republican Conference since 2015, a post he reluctantly took after his predecessor, John Boehner, departed under pressure from a conservatives. In fact, with a young family living halfway across the country, I suspect there's more than just a kernel of truth to his explanation.

Honored to have Republican Congressional Leadership join me at the @WhiteHouse this evening.

At the conference meeting, Ryan, who has had a hard relationship with Trump, thanked the president for giving him the chance to move the GOP ahead. During the interview, Ryan said that even as he would be stepping away from formal Republican politics, he'd still advocate for expanding the GOP's appeal, including pushing for increased diversity in the party.

When giving examples of what kind of recruitment he's been involved with, Ryan mentioned Rep. Mia Love, the Utah Republican whose parents are Haitian immigrants and whose criticism of the president is well-known.

But a top GOP fundraiser, Eric Tanenblatt, expects Ryan to remain a force in a tough cycle. "I understand his decision to return to Wisconsin and his family, but I will dearly miss my friend". Aides to McCarthy and Scalise declined to immediately provide comment. That includes $2.1 million in the first quarter of 2018. Bernie Sanders and NARAL Pro-Choice America, faces a Democratic primary challenge from Janesville teacher Cathy Myers.

-Whenever a speaker of the House says he is heading for the exit, it is always about much more than the comings and goings of a single member of Congress. The Democratic House leader, Nancy Pelosi of California, said she hoped Ryan would work constructively on bipartisan goals before he leaves.

The only declared Republicans so far are white supremacist Paul Nehlen, who was banned from Twitter earlier this year for a series of posts criticized as racist and anti-Semitic, and Nick Polce, an Army veteran who co-owns a security-consulting firm.
