Colorado teachers to rally at Capitol for school funding

Several teachers made their way to the state Capitol on Monday morning, demanding more funding for education.

Cohn says at this point, she's 51 years old and it's just not feasible for her to start a new career - which means she's dependent on getting the pension benefits she expected.

Mary and Ashley, who both work for Englewood Schools and declined to give their last names, said the protests are truly about "everybody".

Hundreds of teachers showed up Monday at the Capitol to let lawmakers know that even though classes are largely back in session across Oklahoma, educators aren't finished.

In 2016, Colorado's average teacher salary was $46,155. And, they said those delegates would keep returning for as long as it takes.

Kelly Marsaln-McBride, an eighth-grade science and leadership teacher with Berryhill Public Schools, said the education union doesn't speak for her. He said because funding is so low, he feels his students don't have the resources they need to succeed.

Englewood School District, outside the capital city, announced on Sunday that schools would be closed the following day as 70 percent of its teachers had indicated they wouldn't be working Monday. "You can not pay rent for a one bedroom in Denver on a teachers' salary". "As teachers, we've become complacent". "ETFO's education agenda calls for greater student access to specialist teachers to provide more support in the arts and physical education as well as more guidance teachers and teacher-librarians".

And though she'll see her salary increase by about $5,800 with the new pay scale, after 10 years in the classroom, Wiser said she now only makes about $34,000 with a master's degree in chemistry.

"We're not where we need to be", she said.

Colorado's average teacher salary - $46,155 - ranks 46th in the country.

- Education funding: Colorado effectively has underfunded its schools by $828 million, the CEA says, because the state hasn't kept up with a state constitutional mandate passed last decade to increase funds each year by at least the rate of inflation.
