Gas prices go back up in Baton Rouge after one week reprieve

The average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded across Florida on Monday was $2.63, with the national average at $2.71.

Despite the increase, the average cost for a gallon of gas in Virginia still sits almost 20 cents lower than the national average, which hovered at $2.71 on Monday.

The price of gas has been increasing since February.

So what happened last week to change things? Growing crude exports, alongside OPEC-led production cuts, have helped stocks decrease over the past year, but the year-over-year decline in stocks has contributed to higher crude prices.

For perspective, crude oil was hovering around $48 a barrel back in September 2015.

"Ultimately, (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) bears much of the responsibility for cutting oil production in 2017, leaving USA oil inventories at far lower levels than a year ago".

The tension in the Middle East and fears of US sanctions against Syria's sponsors - Russian Federation and Iran - have prompted a tightening of global crude oil supplies.

Nationally, gas prices are expected to continue to climb over the coming months, AAA Tidewater said.

Even under ideal circumstances, Golden State gas prices were primed to rise. "Refinery maintenance has gone well thus far, and gasoline supply has continued to push higher as more refiners conclude their work". And California's relatively healthy economy has prompted Golden State residents to hit the road well before the traditional summer driving season.

California's high fuel taxes and fees have likewise played a role.

Drivers in the Bradenton area already are facing the highest April gas prices in four years, and analysts are predicting costs will surge upwards of 15 cents because of the tensions in the Middle East.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for gas price comparison site, said that's the highest national average price since July 2015. However, we're likely in the closing innings of the seasonal rise.

"That could be very close to what we expect this time around", DeHaan said.
