Granddaughter: Barbara Bush is 'a fighter,' in good spirits

Bush, 92, made the decision to forgo medical treatments and "focus on comfort care" after consulting her family and doctors amid a series of recent hospitalizations, according to a statement shared by spokesman Jim McGrath.

"As my mom has become more and more frail - she's not able to walk anymore and take her dogs out and that kind of thing - we have quality time and we're sharing this quality time with other family members and friends that come by to read", Bush said.

McGrath said Mrs. Bush spent two days at Methodist Hospital earlier this month but decided not to return there when her health began to deteriorate.

McGrath said she has been treated for decades for Graves disease, which is a thyroid condition. They have been married longer than any other presidential couple in American history, now in their 73rd year. She also had a heart surgery in 2009 for a severe narrowing of her main heart valve and was hospitalised a year before that for surgery on a perforated ulcer.

Barbara is now the nation's oldest living first lady.

Hager said the former president "still says, "I love you Barbie" every night", describing their grandparents' close relationship as "remarkable". Bush donated the proceeds of the books to her charity, which is aimed to improve the lives of American families through literacy.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith - but for others", the statement said.

She is 92 years old. It started when she attended reading day at her son's school. No, not yet. A premature article announcing her death was published by a site that regularily posts fake news and articles that are not true.

What a well-lived life it has been for Barbara Bush. The foundation partners with local programs and has awarded more than $40 million to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide. "She was a greater conscience to her husband, to her sons, to her daughter and to those who had the benefit of being in her proximity".

Known for her wit and wisdom, a strong defender of family and country....we send our prayers for comfort to this handsome American woman to whom we owe many thanks.
