Modi responsible for terrifying state of affairs: Ex-bureaucrats write to PM

This apart, PM Modi and Mr Lofven will attend a round table of Swedish CEOs.

During the visit, he is likely to hold bilateral talks with Britain and heads of other Commonwealth countries. The PM expressed confidence that visits to Sweden and United Kingdom would help in enhancing India's engagement with these countries.

Sweden has supported India's key "Make-in-India" manufacturing summit with Löfven leading a delegation of Swedish industry leaders to the launch of Make India in Mumbai in 2016.

Prime Minister Modi will then attend the India-Nordic Summit and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sweden.

As hundreds of protestors marched in various cities on Sunday evening to seek action against the accused in the Kathua and Unnao rape cases, 49 former civil servants have written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, holding him responsible "more than anyone else" for the "terrifying state of affairs" in the country. Besides participation in Common Wealth's meetings, Modi will take part in bilateral talks in order to sign a dozen agreements to boost Delhi-London ties.

This is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Sweden in 30 years after the visit of Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.

India and Sweden will jointly organise the India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm on April 17 with the Prime Ministers of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. "Nordic competencies fit well with our vision for India's transformation", Modi said. The Nordic countries have globally recognised strengths in clean technologies, environmental solutions, ports modernisation, cold-chains, skill development and innovation.

Earlier, he visited the United Kingdom in November 2015.

Under the theme of "Living Bridge", he will also have the opportunity to meet people from various walks of life who have enriched the multi-faceted India-UK relationship.

Prime minister, these two incidents are not just ordinary crimes where, with the passage of time, the wounds inflicted on our social fabric, on our body politic and the moral fibre of our society will heal and it will soon be business as usual. Mr Modi said, he will be focusing on enhancing India-UK partnership in the areas healthcare, innovation, digitization, electric mobility, clean energy, and cyber security.

Modi and Lofven also travelled together in the same vehicle from the airport to the hotel, he said.

After Stockholm, Modi travels to London to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where Britain hopes to bolster its trade ties around the world in anticipation of Brexit.
