National Basketball Association mourns the death of Erin Popovich, wife of Spurs coach

The team announced Erin Popovich, wife of San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich, passed away.

Erin was previously ill for an extended period, according to ESPN.

Gregg Popovich, 69, has coached San Antonio since 1996, leading the Spurs to five National Basketball Association titles.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford released a statement following her passing. "She was a strong, wonderful, kind intelligent woman who provided love, support and humor to all of us". The team is taking on the Golden State Warriors Thursday night in San Antonio. The Warriors lead the series 2-0.

Members of the Spurs' family offered tributes to Erin Popovich.

Popovich ran the Spurs' practice Wednesday.

On TNT, Ernie Johnson delivered the news as well as the thoughts and prayers of everyone to Coach Popovich and his family. "My deepest sympathies to Pop and his daughters", National Basketball Association legend Steve Nash tweeted. "My heart goes out to him & his family".

There is no confirmation yet whether or not Popovich will join the team in Game 3.
