Apple unveils 'Apple GiveBack' recycling program and 'Daisy' the recycling robot

Apple's newest disassembly robot, Daisy, is the most efficient way to reclaim more of the valuable materials stored in iPhone. Liam was revealed in 2016, but now, his old parts are being used by Daisy, which is ironic, since Daisy's goal is to recycle old iPhones.

In a blog post about its new Earth Day recycling promotion, Apple also revealed the first details about Daisy, which can churn through 200 iPhones an hour to recycle precious materials.

Apple has issued a press release announcing that from today through April 30th, the company will make a donation to Conservation International for each device turned in for recycling through Apple's GiveBack program. And Daisy can take apart nine different versions of the iPhone, a step up from Liam's limited capabilities that only allowed it to dismantle the iPhone 6.

From now until April 30, for every Apple device traded in or recycled, Apple will donate part of its proceeds to Conservation International, an NGO supporting causes around better livelihoods with environmental policy and action. Apple's other ongoing effort is through its charitable GiveBack program, which aims to encourage recycling of old electronics. Eligible devices will receive credit that customers can use toward an in-store purchase or put on an Apple Store Gift Card for future use. Founded in 1987, the organization works in more than 30 countries on six continents to ensure a healthy, prosperous planet. "We're also thrilled to introduce Daisy to the world, as she represents what's possible when innovation and conservation meet".

From the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 7 Plus, Daisy is made up of five robots that can pick out aluminium, gold, silver, copper, palladium, tantalum, and more.

Finally, notifications are being sent to Apple Watch users today announcing an Earth Day fitness challenge.
