Pentagon: Chinese-Made Cellphones A Security Risk, Sales Banned At Bases

United States military personnel are still allowed to buy and own ZTE and Huawei phones for their personal use from elsewhere, although the Pentagon is now deciding whether it is necessary to issue a wider advisory about the purchase of phones by the two brands, said Eastburn.

President Trump has threatened to place up to $150 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods as punishment for intellectual property theft.

ZTE and Huawei did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

US lawmakers and the Trump administration have pressured USA companies to not sell Huawei or ZTE products, saying they potentially could be used to spy on Americans. Both ZTE and Huawei were mentioned in the FCC's proposal in a section detailing the federal government's concerns with foreign tech providers.

The Pentagon has ordered United States military bases to stop selling Chinese-made ZTE and Huawei phones over concerns that they pose a threat to national security.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai told Congress in March he shared the concerns of USA lawmakers about espionage threats from Huawei.

As of April 25, the Pentagon ordered that these and related products be removed from its stores worldwide, according to Pentagon spokesman Major Dave Eastburn. The Wall Street Journal reports that the move is likely aimed at Huawei and ZTE, which have been accused of spying on Americans through their products.

"These devices may pose an unacceptable risk to the department's personnel, and mission", Eastburn said.

As per the new Defense Department directive, the service members of USA will not be allowed to purchase ZTE and Huawei phones at military bases due to security risks which the devices may pose.
