Freakish red card sees Ireland junior keeper dismissed in vital shootout

Freakish red card sees Ireland junior keeper dismissed in vital shootout

Cape Town - Ireland were knocked out in freaky fashion at the Under-17 European Championship by Holland after goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran was sent off during a penalty shoot-out for encroachment.

Corcoran pulled off an impressive save to keep Holland's fifth and decisive spot-kick from Daishawn Redan out and to seemingly keep his side's hopes alive.

The effort was saved by Corcoran, but referee Zbynek Proske saw the keeper had advanced from his line and showed him with a second yellow card.

Dutch captain Redan stepped up to retake the penalty and fired the ball the same way but this time beat stand-in keeper McEntee to send Holland through to the semi-finals.

His celebrations were cruelly cut short when Czech referee Zbyněk Proske ordered the penalty to be retaken as he adjudged Corcoran to have moved off his line before Proske blew his whistle.

But his moment of joy suddenly turned to shock as he received a second yellow card for a supposed infraction.

Corcoran was understandably distraught after being dismissed.

The teams were forced to decide the match by a penalty shootout after the match had ended 1-1.

Ireland goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran then made a simply superb diving stop to deny Iwan Redan's effort, and thus set up a potential winning kick for his country.

Ireland manager O'Neill came down from the stands and onto the pitch following the shootout to remonstrate with the referee, who was led away by UEFA officials. "It still is the moment of his career so far but just for the wrong reasons unfortunately".
