18 bodies recovered, 50 trapped in Varanasi flyover collapse

Local residents said that two pillars of the flyover collapsed in Varanasi's Cantt area.

National Disaster Management Force Inspector Neeraj Kumar told reporters that 18 bodies have so far been pulled from under the rubbles of the collapsed portion of the flyover and three persons were rescued, reports our New Delhi correspondent. "Rescue work is on and our focus is to take out the people from under the rubble", a district official said. Witnesses said the toll could go up as over 10 four-wheelers and a 32-seater bus were trapped. The span which fell today was laid barely three months ago, they added.

The Prime Minister also expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was on his way to the mishap site. He also set up a high-powered three-member panel under agriculture production commissioner Raj Pratap Singh to look into the accident, which will submit a preliminary report within 48 hours. Pictures from the incident site showed passengers being pulled out from a vehicle trapped under the collapsed portion of the flyover.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would reach Varanasi late in the night to take stock of the situation, the official said.

In a horrific tragedy, an under-construction flyover collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi on Tuesday, claiming 15 lives and injuring 11 others. "I pray that the injured recover soon", he said. In his tweet, PM Narendra Modi said.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Governor Ram Naik too condoled the deaths. Authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident, and the state government is providing families of the victims with monetary compensation.

"This is the reality of development in the top-priority constituency of the country". Is this incident an accident or result of corruption? Sources in the state government have told NDTV that initial probe findings point at huge negligence.

We request the citizens of #Varanasi to avoid going to the spot of the incident. The crowd not just acts as a hindrance in relief and rescue work but also poses danger for your own safety.
