Boston Dynamics SpotMini Robot Will Go On Sale In 2019

The SpotMini robot Raibert made the announcement onstage at the TechCrunch's TC Sessions: Robotics 2018 event today, at UC Berkeley.

Boston Dynamics has released a video showing its Atlas robot out for a run in the countryside.

In the first SpotMini video from 2016, we're shown the original robot performing various chores around the house, including loading up the dishwasher and throwing away trash.

The robot's main frame has a quick-disconnect battery, stereo cameras in the front, side cameras and a "butt cam", but it can also be upgraded with a series of attachments on the top, including an articulated arm.

At a robotics conference in California, the company's founder Marc Raibert announced that the slightly creepy SpotMini was now in pre-production and scheduled for large-scale production and general availability from middle of 2019. The device weighs around 66 pounds and can operate for about 90 minutes on a charge.

Combining advanced analytical thinking with practicality, they transform projects from initial concept to proof-of-principle prototyping to build-test-build engineering, testing and finally production. There is no talk about a price tag yet. He didn't say how much the SpotMini will cost. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese Tokyo-based conglomerate the SoftBank group.

But he thinks other applications for the four-legged contraption will be likely developed by other companies, because the robot has a flat platform to allow other equipment with its own computer programming to be easily mounted on top of it. The robot was meant to carry goods. The company was acquired by Google later Alphabet in December of 2013 but later sold to the SoftBank group in June of a year ago.

The SpotMini now comes with a terrifying appendage, one so incredibly versatile that the feared robot apocalypse now seems more "when" than "if".
