HTC announce blockchain-powered smartphone

According to a report by The Next Web, Taiwanese hardware manufacturer HTC is now working on an Android smartphone powered by blockchain technology. Either way, add HTC to the list of companies interested in finding profit from the subject with it's new Exodus, ostensibly a decentralized, blockchain and buzzword-packed marketing experience that may also be a phone. The phone will also support decentralized applications (DApps).

Furthermore, all Exodus phones will also act as nodes to manage cryptocurrency trading that takes place through HTC's own blockchain network. The Exodus will have a universal wallet, and users will be able to store cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin inside.

Sirin Labs, a cryptocurrency startup that plans to release a blockchain-powered smartphone called the "Finney" in October, is charging $1,000 for its device.

Introduced and led by Phil Chen, a co-founder of HTC Vive, the Exodus is meant to be the "world's first phone dedicated to decentralized applications and security". Chen said that he believes that a blockchain-powered smartphone might inspire a new wave of decentralized systems, in the same way that the availability of computers once paved the way for the makings of the internet.

HTC has not yet released a price tag for the Exodus, but the company did hint that it is considering accepting cryptocurrency payments once it becomes available for purchase.

Through Exodus, we are excited to be supporting underlying protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and more. We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months well be announcing many more exciting partnerships together.

HTC isn't the first phone-maker to announce a dedicated blockchain device. Among other features, they'd allow users on a network to trade crypto without any additional fees. Even with rapidly increasing awareness and interest in the cryptocurrency space, however, it's hard to imagine Exodus making much of a splash.
