Stephen Piscotty (bereavement) returns for Athletics on Tuesday

Stephen Piscotty homered in his first at-bat after being reinstated from the bereavement list and saluted his late mother as he crossed home plate, helping lead the Oakland Athletics to a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night in a game delayed nearly two hours because of weather.

"It was pure joy", Piscotty said of his blast in the A's 5-3 victory over the Red Sox, per SFGate.com.

Stephen Piscotty put his hand to his heart and crossed home plate, looking up at his mom in heaven.

"Running around [the bases] was pretty emotional". Piscotty, a Bay Area native, was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the A's in December, enabling him to care for his mother at their Pleasanton, California, home.

"He wanted to play". "I know he was really- looking forward to that first at-bat".

In his first at-bat of the game in the top of the second, Piscotty belted a solo home run over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Kendall Graveman was optioned to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.

Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1) took his first loss of the season after getting roughed up in the first few innings.

Oakland has won four in a row over the Red Sox and has won the season series for the second year in a row.
