With 60 Killed In Gaza, UN Rights Commissioner Criticizes Israel

A total of 114 Palestinians have been killed since March 30 while only one Israeli soldier has been reported wounded. Palestinians along the Gaza border had earlier hurled firebombs and stones towards troops.

The IDF estimated that around 35,000 people - who it describes as "violent rioters" - had assembled in 12 different locations along the border fence between Gaza and Israel and thousands more were gathered in a tent city about a kilometer from the border.

But the United States, which blamed Hamas, blocked the adoption of a UN Security Council statement that would have called for an independent probe into the violence, diplomats said.

The Gaza border with Israel was much quieter on Tuesday as Palestinians marked "Nakba", or catastrophe day, as the death toll from Monday's shootings rose to 60 overnight.

Eighty-six different countries were invited to send representatives to the ceremony in Jerusalem but less than half did, which underlines the controversy surrounding the embassy move.

US President Donald Trump "was clear and explicit, and he revealed the true face of the modern Crusade, where standing down and appeasement does not work with them, but only resistance through the call and jihad", Zawahiri said, according to a transcript.

Britain's minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, acknowledged "Israel's right to defend its borders" but said "the large volume of live fire is extremely concerning". The protesters were upset that the U.S. embassy opened in Jerusalem on Monday.

He told the dedication ceremony that it had been a "long time coming", adding: "Israel is a sovereign nation with the right to determine its own capital but for many years we failed to acknowledge the obvious".

The White House has said the responsibility for the Gaza deaths "rests squarely with Hamas", the territory's ruling organisation which has been designated a terrorist group by the United States and EU.

Pressed on whether the White House believed Israel should "shoulder the blame" for the 55 Palestinians killed by Israeli snipers, or rein in its military's response, Shah stated, "This is a propaganda attempt".

The protests mark the culmination of a campaign led by Hamas to break the blockade of the territory imposed by Israel and Egypt since 2007.

Israeli forces have faced criticism over the use of live fire to confront Palestinians at the border during demonstrations the past seven weeks, but Israeli officials say the actions are necessary to protect the border and accused Hamas militants of using protests as a cover to carry out attacks.

Trump, in a tweet, called it "A great day for Israel".

On the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence, a day of celebration was marked by a day of angry protests.

Most of the global community does not formally recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and nearly all embassies are located in Tel Aviv. "As a result, Israel has not only hardened its oppression on Palestinians, [but] it has expanded its occupation in the West Bank, through forceful removals of Palestinians from their lands".
