Shocking Scenes As Masked Intruders Attack Sporting Lisbon Players

Sporting Lisbon's Netherlands worldwide Bas Dost was injured after around 50 hooded supporters, armed with sticks and belts, attacked players and staff at the club's training complex, Portuguese media reported on Tuesday.

"Sporting is not this, and Sporting can not be this".

The club and the Portuguese FA have already condemned the attack on the players and the staff, but it seems it could motivate an exodus from the club in the summer.

"It was a distressing situation and we are all shocked", the striker, with 27 league goals to his name this season, told Dutch news website Algemeen Dagblad.

Argentina worldwide Marcos Acuna and Croatia's Josip Misic were also assaulted in the raid on Sporting's Alcochete training base in the Lisbon suburbs.

The incident occurred just days after goalkeeper Patricio's late mistake caused Sporting to lose 2-1 at Maritimo, an error that ultimately caused the club to miss out on qualifying for next season's Champions League.

It is preparing to play the Portuguese Cup final against Aves on Sunday.

Portuguese police have made 21 arrests, according to the government.

According to the local media, cited by, around 50 hooded intruders carrying torches attacked the players, with belts and iron elements at the Sporting Academia training base.

Following the attack, fans gathered to support their team and protest the brutality against the players and management.

"The Juventude Leonina numbers more than 7,000 fans".

"The perpetrators of these incidents are not fans of football, they are criminals", the league said.

Club president Bruno de Carvalho launched a social media tirade against several of his own players, calling them out by name, following a defeat last month.
