Venezuela Launches Commission to Investigate Prison Riot

His family has denied the accusations, and believe the Venezuelan government is holding Holt and his wife to bargain with the US, which has imposed economic sanctions on the country. In 2016 Holt traveled to Venezuela to marry Thamara Candela.

Shortly afterward, the couple was arrested at her family's apartment in a Caracas public housing project after police said they found him stockpiling arms - an assault weapon and grenades. His family has said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time of a raid in the Caracas neighborhood where his wife's family lives.

Many of those involved are opponents of President Nicolas Maduro, who is expected to stay in office despite a crushing economic crisis and protests against his regime.

"The people have taken the entire prison". They're outside, they're trying to break in. "They are saying that they want me as their guarantee".

An American prisoner has posted videos on Facebook from inside a Venezuelan jail seized by inmates ahead of the controversial presidential election. "That delegation spoke to a representative of the prisoners to respond to their requests".




Diosdado Cabello, leader of the Venezuelan Socialist Party, has accused Holt of being a United States agent and the country's top spy in Latin America, but he has not yet been put on trial.

Cabello also broke a longstanding silence from Venezuelan officials' about Holt's imprisonment to accuse the American of being a spy.

"We're very anxious about the mutiny in the Helicoide". Holt denies the charges.

In the videos, Holt also called on Americans to step up to get him out, since he's been asking the government for help for years to no avail.

Todd Robinson, the chargé d'affaires at the USA embassy, went to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry for information, the embassy added but there was, 'no response from the government'. Several of Maduro's top opponents are barred from running.

Mr Ceballos, the former opposition mayor of the western city of San Cristóbal, said the inmates had taken control of parts of the jail.

'Joshua Holt and other USA citizens are in danger. "No response from the government".

Senator Orrin Hatch has been working with the Trump Administration to bring Holt and his wife home.
