YouTube to revamp music service, charge more for ad-free shows

The music offerings from YouTube and Google have been disjointed and confusing for a long time - you may remember the short-lived YouTube Music Key, which essentially offered the same options as the new YouTube Music does, before it was shuttered in 2015. YouTube Music will cost $9.99 a month, and - this is a surprise given past speculation - the new service will still sit alongside Google Play Music for now, rather than replacing it.

Further, the company has also introduced YouTube Premium, which a revamped version of its YouTube Red service for $11.99 per month. There will be other "bells and whistles", but there's no word on what those might be just yet.

"If you are a subscriber to Google Play Music, good news, you get a YouTube Music Premium membership as part of your subscription each month".

But that's not all.

YouTube is also rebranding YouTubed Red, its ad-free service across all of YouTube, as YouTube Premium. YouTube Premium, formerly YouTube Red, will ask for a higher $12 a month commitment in exchange for a totally ad-free YouTube and original content.

What do you think of these changes? It has both mobile app and desktop experiences, playlists, artist radio, music videos, remixes, covers, and everything else you could ask for in a music service. It's basically all of the music you find on YouTube, with videos and everything, better put together than the current YouTube Music.

YouTube Music search works even if fans don't know exactly what they're looking for ... we'll find it if they describe it (try "that hipster song with the whistling") or give us some lyrics (try "I make money moves").

And what of Google Play Music?

YouTube will launch a revamped version of its music service, YouTube Red, which comes with extra features like personalised playlists based on individual's YouTube history and other usage patterns, Recode said. At the airport? We'll recommend something relaxing before the flight. "It's a little bit of an art and not a science, because you might be using YouTube to research something, and we really want to be playing things you want", he said.

Last year Google confirmed the engineering teams working on Google Play Music and YouTube Music had joined forces, and it seems likely that we'll eventually see everything that you can buy digitally from Google rolled into YouTube - music, movies, TV shows, and so on, though that's just speculation for now.

YouTube Music will be launched in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea on Tuesday. It will expand more broadly in the coming weeks. The brand will bring Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom later. While artists get paid for their videos through advertising on Youtube, many music studios have complained about how the current situation greatly benefits YouTube over the original artists.
