Government of Canada buys Kinder Morgan Pipeline

The Trans Mountain expansion would nearly triple capacity to 890,000 barrels of oil on a line running from Alberta to a terminal near Vancouver.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau insists his government is going to get the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion built, but still has nothing to say about how, even as Kinder Morgan's deadline clock ticks ever closer to the end.

Morneau presented the options during an early-morning cabinet meeting Tuesday before ministers signed off on the chosen option, which comes just days before the company's self-imposed May 31 deadline and is still subject to the approval of Kinder Morgan shareholders.

"We are purchasing the assets; we are purchasing the existing assets, and the investment in the twinning of that pipeline, and those assets are what is required for us to move forward with the expansion", he said.

It plans to seek a buyer.

"At the appropriate time, Canada will work with investors to transfer the project and related assets to a new owner or owners, in a way that ensures the project's construction and operation will proceed in a manner that protects the public interest", the government said on Tuesday.

The federal government and the Houston company were in talks for over a month about saving the project, which Kinder Morgan threatened to abandon as of Thursday unless federal officials remove political.

"The Trudeau government's reckless choice to compel Trans Mountain endangers the lives and welfare of its citizens", said Ruth Breech at Rainforest Action Network.

A new Crown corporation will be created to manage the project.

Numerous indigenous groups also oppose the project, though a number of First Nations have signed on to the expansion project.

The Alberta government has agreed to cover any unexpected costs that arise during construction.

The pipeline would allow Canada to diversify and increase exports to Asia, where it could command a higher price. A lack of capacity in pipelines or in rail cars to ship oil produced in Alberta is also hurting Canada's energy sector.

The company suspended all non-essential construction on the project in April, citing opposition from the B.C. government that put the viability of the pipeline in question.
