Lions, tigers and jaguar escape from German zoo - residents warned STAY INSIDE

Three lion cubs were born on April 14, 2018 at the zoo.

Police killed a bear and were searching for two lions, two tigers and a jaguar that broke out of their cages in a zoo in western Germany on Friday.

A recent storm caused damage in some parts of the region, though it was unclear whether the animals escaped because of damage caused by the storm. Residents of the German town Lunebach were asked to keep all doors and windows closed as local police rounded up the roaming animals. A bear was shot dead, Sky News reported.

Officials are verifying if the fences and cages are secure, said the spokesman.

The high waters damaged the cages, allowing the animals to go on the run.

SWR reported that local authorities were warning all residents in the area, near the border with Luxembourg and Belgium, to remain indoors as they search for the animals. Police say they are responding the situation but now have no further details.

The zoo is home to about 400 animals, many of which are big cats. One was captured, the other shot dead.

Friday's escape came two years after a similar case in eastern Germany, when two lions broke out of their cages at the Leipzig zoo.
