He said that after 14 years, Pakistan has still a long way to go in order to fulfill its global obligations by implementing stronger tobacco control policies. This combination is the world's leading cause of death.

Parts of Western Europe have reached a "standstill", particularly due to a failure to get women to stop smoking, African men are lagging, and tobacco use in the Middle East is actually set to increase, the World Health Organization said.

The regional Director observed that although concrete actions and measures exist to stem the tide of tobacco related diseases, more needs to be done to further raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use.

Abuja - As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate World No Tobacco Day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) wednesday tasked the federal government and other stakeholders on the need to stem the tide of tobacco-related diseases in the country.

"Policies that regulate tobacco, promote smoke-free environments and encourage people to quit smoking will contribute to improving the health and well-being of all people".

To stop the diseases caused by tobacco use, let us make every day a "World No Tobacco Day". The report shows the pace of action in reducing tobacco demand and related death and disease is too slow and not keeping up with global and national commitments to control tobacco use. "This is why it is so important that countries accelerate the implementation of the FCTC".

According to the report, no fewer that 1.1 billion people are smokers in the world today, the same number as at the turn of the century. In 2017, there were 12.2 million smokers.

Tobacco sales have even declined in China, down by 10 percent from a peak in 2012, according to the Euromonitor International market research group. For females, 11% smoked in 2000, compared to 6% in 2015. He added that while governments are budgeting large outlays for setting up healthcare facilities there should be greater focus on prevention strategies, chief among them being reduction of tobacco usage.

"Most people associate cigarette, pipe, and cigar use with breathing problems and lung cancer".

The American Cancer Society says these alternative tobacco products should be taxed just as high as cigarettes.

Twenty-five per cent of smokers are using e-cigarette or vaping device to cut down smoking.

A country-by-country analysis warns that "the smoking epidemic is being exported from the rich world to low-income and middle-income countries".
