Number of Texans sickened by E. coli from romaine lettuce rises

Still, the CDC warns that iIllnesses that occurred after May 6, 2018 might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.

However, the lettuce from that region is past its shelf life and is likely no longer being sold in stores or served in restaurants, the FDA said.

Five people were killed and almost 200 were sickened by an E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce, but the threat of new cases has likely passed, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Previously one death had been reported, in California.

The recent E. coli outbreak is the most severe to hit the USA since 2006, when three people died in an outbreak linked to uncooked spinach. While they have traced the toxic E. coli strain to the Yuma growing region, they are still looking for the precise source - whether it originated in the water supply, harvesting equipment, a processing plant in the area or somewhere else.

The E. coli outbreak began in April and has spread across the US. On Friday, health officials said they have learned of four more - two in Minnesota and one each in Arkansas and NY.

The Shiga toxin-producing bacteria has infected 197 people in 35 states since March, the CDC said in a new statistics report Friday. People who get sick from toxin-producing E. coli come down with symptoms about three to four days after consumption, with many suffering bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Twenty-six of those patients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a form of kidney failure.
