Doctors welcome possible 'holy grail of cancer research'

A new blood test with the potential to detect up to ten different cancers long before any symptoms appear may be available on the NHS within five years, scientists have announced.

For the study, the study analyzed 749 people with no cancer condition, while 878 people were examined with an early stage of the disease, and have not yet been treated. the type of cancer, which found to be the most common to detect during the examination, was ovarian cancer rating 90 per cent of the overall detection, 80 per cent of the diagnosis was pancreatic and bowel cancer was two third during the diagnosis, according to the findings of the report. Scientists at Grail, a United States company funded by Mr Gates and Mr Bezos, have set their sights on identifying a range of cancers from a... Three DNA tests were used to screen the samples. One of the issues is the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain.

However, it's important to note that the number of people in which these cancers were detected was small.

The test was less precise for lung, esophageal, and head and neck cancers, detecting these cancers with about 50 to 60 percent accuracy. Findings of the study are scheduled to be disclosed during the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ACSO) meeting this weekend, in Chicago. But academics say it is much more sensitive than previous tests.

However, it was less effective at detecting stomach, uterine and early-stage prostate cancer, the authors said.

For cancer there is now just one blood test available to diagnose people before they find a lump or initial symptom – the notoriously unreliable PSA test for prostate cancer.

It works by pinpointing DNA that has broken free of a tumor.

Researchers hope the tests will become part of a "universal screening" tool that doctors can use to detect cancer in patients.

The procedure, known as a liquid biopsy, is being hailed as a major breakthrough in cancer treatment, after trials on more than 1,600 patients found that the test worked with up to 90% accuracy.

‘The goal is to develop a blood test, such as this one, that can accurately identify cancers in their earliest stages.

Professor Nicolas Turner of the London's Institute of Cancer Research said he was "excited" and the research could reduce diagnosis times.

"This particular test is really exciting but it is likely to be a few years before it is ready for clinical use".

Simon Stevens, chief executive of the National Health Service in England, said: "We stand on the cusp of a new era of personalized medicine that will dramatically transform care for cancer and for inherited and rare diseases".
