SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carries satellite into orbit

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carries satellite into orbit

The company has now re-flown Falcon 9 first stages 13 times and landed the boosters on more than two dozen occasions.

The goal of the launch is for the SES-12 spacecraft to reach geostationary orbit.

The launch was, of course, the highlight of the event but the breathtaking photos that followed were the real winners. According to the mission's press kit, the Falcon 9 rocket's second stage will deploy the satellite 32 minutes and 14 seconds after liftoff. Space Exploration Technologies, or Space X, was founded by billionaire Elon Musk, an internet entrepreneur who co-founded PayPal and leads Tesla Motors.

SpaceX won't land the booster again, as the company is trying to phase out the Block 4 rockets for the new Block 5 configuration.

The launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Launch Complex 40 carried a satellite for one world's biggest satellite companies - Luxembourg-based SES.

SpaceX will not attempt to recover the first stage-the rocket will instead fall into the ocean. "SES-12 will also be pivotal in enabling governments that want to roll out connectivity programs to bridge the digital divide and in allowing telcos, mobile network operators and internet service providers to deliver more reliable cellular backhaul and broadband services".
