Tesla Model X in California crash sped up prior to impact

Eight seconds before the crash, the SUV was following a vehicle and traveling about 65 miles per hour. Recovered data showed that Huang, an engineer for Apple, received alerts from the auto to place his hands on the steering wheel more than 15 minutes before the crash. Passersby pulled Huang from the wreckage moments before the vehicle burst into flames, but he later died from his injuries at a hospital.

In a shareholders' meeting this week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk didn't directly answer questions about the safety of its Autopilot system, but said that a significant revision would be pushed to cars next week.

A Tesla spokesperson declined to comment on the NTSB report, and instead pointed to a blog post the company issued on March 30.

The NTSB findings indicate that Autopilot steered the vehicle towards the crash attenuator and accelerated. The vehicle's emergency braking and evasive steering did not engage.

The NTSB's preliminary report states that all "aspects of the crash remain under investigation as the NTSB determines the probable cause, with the intent of issuing safety recommendations to prevent similar crashes". Indeed, Tesla could use exterior cameras to send images to small screens inside the vehicle, exactly like Audi's e-tron, a future direct rival for the Model X.

Four seconds before the crash, the Tesla no longer detected a vehicle in front of it, and with the cruise control engaged and set at 75 mph, it began speeding up, from 62 mph three seconds before impact to 70.8 mph at the time of impact. Back in April, the NTSB announced that Tesla had been taken off of the investigation for releasing information before it could be vetted and confirmed. One particularly unfortunate incident happened in March when a Model X crashed into a highway barrier, killing driver Walter Huang.

The probe into a March crash of a Tesla Model X in Mountain View that killed the vehicle's driver took another turn Thursday as federal investigators said the auto was speeding and the driver didn't have his hands on the car's steering wheel during the last seconds leading up to the collision.

Bystanders removed Huang from the vehicle before its battery pack caught fire, and he was transported to a nearby hospital where he died later from his injuries.

In context: Tesla has drawn quite a bit of heat lately due to numerous crashes that have occurred with Autopilot engaged.

The Tesla collided with a so-called crash attenuator, a device covering the concrete barrier that's created to absorb a vehicle impact to lower risks of damage and injuries. Four seconds before the crash the Tesla wasn't following a vehicle any more.

"The consequences of the public not using Autopilot, because of an inaccurate belief that it is less safe, would be extremely severe", Tesla's March blog post said.

Federal investigators in May removed Tesla from the official investigation into the California crash after the automaker seemingly blamed the driver for the crash publicly.

On March 28, 5 days after the accident, the Model X's battery pack reignited.
