Trump's vow to end military drills with Seoul stuns a region

-South Korean military drills - and wants to remove the 28,500 USA troops stationed in the South as a deterrent against North Korea.

Almost 7,800 American troops remain unaccounted for from the 1950-53 war in the Korean Peninsula. U.S. President Donald Trump answers questions about the summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un during a press conference at the Capella resort on Sentosa Island Tuesday, June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

The Pentagon was not immediately able to flesh out Trump's remarks about suspending drills, a move the USA military has long resisted.

"I was shocked when he called the exercises 'provocative, ' a very unlikely word to be used by a US president", the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was a politically sensitive issue.

"I think without the rhetoric we wouldn't have been here".

The general statement on "immediate repatriation" could refer to remains North Korea already has in storage but were never returned after joint recovery efforts were suspended in 2005 amid the political impasse over North Korean provocations and advances in its missile and nuclear programs. "There has been real concern that he would only look after USA interests, not those of our long-standing allies". -South Korea alliance is the US troops stationed in South Korea and the joint U.S.
