Formula One: Verstappen fastest in final practice at Canadian GP

Formula One: Verstappen fastest in final practice at Canadian GP

Ricciardo suspects Hamilton would have been capable of a quicker time than Verstappen.

In the Thursday press conference, Verstappen faced a barrage of questions about his approach to racing and his temperament but on Friday, he did his real talking - delivering a faultless display on a track where Red Bull was not expected to contend.

It was at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix that Hamilton won his first Formula One race, and he's since gone on to emerge victorious in five of the last eight trips to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. "There was some electrical stuff going on that hindered us this morning and then this afternoon, so not the best day, but we're OK". Then came three-time defending Montreal victor Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.

Williams driver Lance Stroll of Canada pulls out of the garage during the first practice session Friday at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. "But also Max was driving really well all weekend, so I won't take that away from him".

"Didn't have any problems, " said Hamilton, who leads the championship standings by 14 points over Vettel and 38 over Ricciardo. "Track fix required between Turns Four and Five", said a message from Race Control meaning a drain cover needed fixing between Casino Square and Mirabeau.

Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley, whose F1 future is up in the air after it emerged the Toro Rosso team made a bid for McLaren protege Lando Norris, was 12th and 1.691s off the pace in the second practice. "If we got in that mess around here on this circuit, it is not as bad as Monaco but it is still very hard to make much progress here". "If we can escape this weekend without it, then I'd rather take it somewhere else".

Renault introduced a new engine for all six cars in Canada, but Monaco GP victor Ricciardo trailed teammate Verstappen throughout practice, qualifying and the race.

"So far everything went well and I have a good feeling".

Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo also had an interesting day. I felt we were always one step back.

"We knew we would probably have a couple of cars to pass and it gives us a chance off the start and on the first lap with a bit more grip, afterwards we will have to manage them".

"I think so", he said with a laugh. The tyres were holding on really well at the end when I was challenging Valtteri because he was fuel saving which shows our auto was working well and for sure we have a very competitive vehicle at the moment. The one from the failure in China is alive, hence we haven't got a penalty. Fortunately the forecast looks good this year, with only partly cloudy skies predicted for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race.
