Johnson back in top form before US Open

Johnson back in top form before US Open

A two-time victor on the Web.com Tour, Putnam birdied No. 18 to tie up Johnson once again after a bogey-free round.

"I have high expectations going into every week", Johnson said when asked about the U.S. Open.

"I didn't really have it today but I was able to close out the round with a couple of birdies and get it back to even", he said.

Johnson opened with a birdie at the 10th.

Dustin Johnson already had his 18th career PGA Tour victory in his grasp, but he chose to end his day with an exclamation point anyway. And Phil Mickelson picked up some momentum heading into the U.S. Open with a Sunday 65 and a T-12 finish.

The 33-year-old climbed back above Justin Thomas, who claimed the spot from Johnson last month, with a tournament-winning 19-under-par score.

The win also vaults Johnson to the new World No. 1. He then put the finishing touches on his ninth win over the past two seasons with birdies on the 13th and 16th. "I've earned my way here and I feel like it's going to be a fun day". He knows it will be the biggest Sunday of his career as he plays in the final pairing for the first time.

Johnson finished with a flourish when his 171-yard second shot on the par-four 18th found the bottom of the cup, sending the crowd at the TPC Southwind in Memphis into a frenzy on a sweltering day.

"I'm glad it over, for sure", Johnson said. "I played really well all week".

He's now won nine PGA Tour events since June 2016. "You don't have them very often out here where the hole looks like it's the size of a beach ball and can't miss a putt". John Daly withdrew before the second round. 15, 16 and 17, but a hiccup at the last hole dropped him to 5 under.

Dustin Johnson, tied for the third round lead with fellow American Andrew Putnam at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Tennessee, will regain the world number one ranking if he wins on Sunday.

He had made three birdies and just one bogey as he stepped on to the final hole and in characteristically nonchalant fashion he proceeded to hole his second from 170 yards.
