Kim invites Trump to visit Pyongyang as North hails 'radical switchover'

US President Donald Trump says his historic talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that ended in a joint agreement were "tremendous".

At least one group of former North Koreans now living in Canada say Trump's new willingness to foster closer ties with Kim are risky, and criticized the president for focusing on denuclearization rather than seeking answers about human rights in the country.

Trump said Kim agreed to shutter a missile engine testing site and to allow the return of remains of American service members lost in North Korea during the Korean War more than 60 years ago.

In its first report on the landmark summit, the official KCNA news agency ran a glowing dispatch on the talks, describing them as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations". Trump said: "That's true". The statement made clear that Pyongyang was expecting US concessions before any moves by the North.

Kim's biggest task in the months ahead will most likely be to try to push China, his country's key trading partner, to lift its sanctions and to entice South Korea to start once again offering crucial investment in joint ventures and infrastructure projects.

Shaheen and other lawmakers added there should be no cancellation of USA military exercises in Asia, as Trump suggested, without first consulting South Korea and other allies in the region.

Trump agreed that war games with South Korea would be halted while negotiations with North Korea continued.

Yet Kimball is anxious by the hard history of negotiations with North Korea, combined with the lack of any timetable or road map for further steps in the latest agreement.

Trump's upside-down calculus, which allowed strategic adversaries China and North Korea to gain at the expense of steadfast allies, echoed the tussle that erupted at last week's Group of Seven meetings in Quebec.

"North Korea is a small and weak country surrounded by big powers and that has made North Koreans paranoid about their own national security and develop nuclear weapons, " said Yoon, speaking on Bloomberg Television.

"An audience of one", the official said.

The US has long held the view that North Korea's illegitimate military activities can't be traded away for its right to do legitimate military activities.

Trump's pledge to end joint exercises with South Korea without explicit concessions from North Korea to lower the military threat posed by Pyongyang took South Korean and US military officials by surprise.

Mr Trump was asked by reporters during his final appearance with Mr Kim what surprised him most during their meetings. At the same time, the spokesman didn't condemn the decision, and Seoul has repeatedly pressed for a cautious approach to North Korea rather than the hasty agreement that Trump and Pompeo had originally pursued.

"We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the USA and South Korea", Onodera was quoted as saying. Both leaders have committed to "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", but it's unclear what specific steps North Korea is willing to take to get there.

Trump rejected the idea that the USA was the loser in the talks. "I really believe that".

It added that North Korea and the United States should take legal, institutional steps to guarantee it. He also hosted Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
