North Korea Poses No Nuclear Threat, Despite Weapons

Even as Pompeo staunchly defended the summit results, he was less exuberant than Trump, who tweeted on his return to the USA on Monday morning: "Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the USA would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea.

Trump's tweets are wrong, as North Korea maintains its nuclear capabilities and the agreement he signed with Kim doesn't detail any sort of verifiable denuclearization process.

Trump's announcement also appeared to surprise both the US and South Korean militaries, who said they hadn't received any instruction to cease the joint military drills, including the Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises scheduled to take place this fall.

If the USA pulls out of South Korea, as Trump wants to, it will accelerate China's dominance in Asia, and likely around the world.

But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight".

Since the end of the Korean war, when Washington fought alongside Seoul against the North, the United States has had troops stationed in South Korea.

Trump's tweets pointed to one of the chief gains at the summit from the United States point of view - that its scheduling and the establishing of a relationship between the President and Kim have eased fears that the two sides are on a slide toward a disastrous war.

The North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before US sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed.

Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond", and Kim said the leaders had "decided to leave the past behind" and promised, "The world will see a major change".

Trump, seemingly unprompted, has long wanted to withdraw the US from South Korea, and now he may have found a reason.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise described positive steps from the meeting, such as Kim saying he's willing to take steps toward denuclearization. That's a long time for these big massive planes to be flying to South Korea to practice and then drop bombs all over the place and then go back to Guam.

Seth Meyers gave the "Closer Look" treatment to the monumental meeting, paying particular attention to Trump and Kim's ill-fitting suits. "All I can say is they want to make a deal".

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware.

Joint military exercises between US and South Korean troops have long angered Pyongyang.

"I'm a realist. I'm not trying to bring democracy to North Korea".
