Peter Navarro's apology to Justin Trudeau for 'hell' remark

Peter Navarro's apology to Justin Trudeau for 'hell' remark

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Tuesday apologized after saying that there is a "special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

An escalating clash over trade between Washington and some of its closest global partners had loomed over Trump's historic summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

Among the many topics the president addressed was his recent Twitter campaign against Trudeau, whom he has called "dishonest" and "weak".

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", he added Sunday, noting his comments came "right from Air Force One".

"I had a very good meeting with the G7", Trump said, rejecting suggestions the summit was a failure. "They don't take our farm products", Mr Trump complained at the news conference.

Over the weekend, Mr. Trudeau said Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs on the United States in response to the Trump administration's recently imposed tariffs on metals after Mr. Trump departed for Singapore.

"I thought he should have kept his big mouth shut, because I don't think that helps us in foreign policy".

"We have been encouraging the federal government to engage with China on free-trade talks because there is such significant potential in that market", said Bilous.

The backstabbing charge seems over the top, but the White House's contention is that Trudeau ought to have capped the G-7 summit by talking about Trump and the U.S.

The relationship between the US and its allies was already off-balance after Mr. Trump just a week before the summit imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum from the European Union and Canada. "The Canadians will regret this action by their prime minister", Gorka said.

And it concludes with a direct shot at Trump, calling on the House to "reject disparaging and ad hominem statements by USA officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute". "We are being taken advantage of by virtually every one of those countries", he said.

The Rust Belt has been one of the hardest regions hit because of US free trade with Mexico.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to withdraw the United States from NAFTA and negotiate bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico.

The US had a trade surplus with Canada of about US$7.7 billion (S$10.3 billion) in 2016, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, although Statistics Canada data show the US had a trade deficit of about US$14.6 billion.
