Trump And Kim Arrive In Singapore For Unprecedented Summit

US President Donald Trump says his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore could "work out very nicely" as officials from both countries met to narrow differences on how to end a nuclear stand-off on the Korean peninsula.

At the Istana, Lee's official residence, the president shook hands with the prime minister, but Trump declined to answer shouted questions from reporters before the two leaders joined their aides for a luncheon. Trump roiled the meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven major industrial economies by first agreeing to a group statement only to withdraw from it while complaining about Trudeau's criticism of his tariff threats.

Trump is to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday while Kim has no official agenda.

Kim held his own meeting with Lee earlier Sunday after landing in the island city-state hours ahead of Trump, who arrived fresh from a contentious G7 summit.

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un will start their historic summit with a one-on-one session with translators.

Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said it was imperative that Trump bring up rights issues with Kim.

Choi's fiery outburst at Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and Vice President Mike Pence a fortnight ago was blamed for Trump suddenly, and briefly, cancelling the summit.

Kim arrived in Singapore on board an Air China 747 that, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24, took off from Pyongyang in the morning ostensibly bound for Beijing then changed its flight number in midair and headed south.

The understated photo op belied the intensive behind-the-scenes negotiations that continued between the USA and North Korean delegations less than 24 hours before Trump was scheduled to meet Kim at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, just off Singapore's southern coast. The leaders also offered lofty promises, with the American president pledged to handle a "very unsafe problem" and Kim forecasting "major change for the world".

Kim told Lee: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between the DPRK and the United States of America, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparation for the historic summit".

"[President Trump] is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea", Kudlow said on CNN's State of the Union.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the US was "prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously".

Rather than bandy the term about, negotiators in Trump's administration should seek to obtain a commitment in writing that North Korea will abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs, Cha continued.

After the USA president noted his nuclear button was "much bigger and more powerful" than Kim's - "and it works" - Pyongyang branded the outburst the "bark of a rabid dog".

"If the summit becomes a success, the Singaporean efforts will go down in history", Kim said.

She emerged as an influential figure in Pyongyang's opaque leadership in February, when she led a North Korean delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.
