Who won in the Trump-Kim summit?

Media captionTrump Kim summit: Win-win, or a Kim win? Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. "We have done these exercises for years with the South Koreans and so I would just ask the president, why do we need to suspend them?"

U.S. war games in South Korea are a big source of tension between the two sides, with Trump conceding they are "provocative".

During his Tuesday interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, President Donald Trump admitted he felt bad that American hostage Otto Warmbier was handed a death sentence in North Korea's jails.

Now, he says he's not happy with how this week's meeting went.

Under the circumstances we are negotiating a complete deal", Trump said, adding "It is inappropriate to have war games.

"Everybody is interested in the summit right now", she said.

The top USA diplomat was set to arrive in Seoul later in the day, Yonhap news agency reported.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White denied that Mattis was caught off guard by the announcement, telling Pentagon reporters: "There were no surprises".

How did South Korea react?

Two of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's closest aides - a former military intelligence chief and the country's foreign minister - are being talked of as the most likely candidates to negotiate with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on denuclearization.

War games even nearly derailed the summit.

He's expected to meet privately in the evening with Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea. -South Korea defensive military exercises has stunned our allies and our own military.

"We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money, unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should", he said.

What else did they agree at the summit?

About 28,500 USA troops are stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in 1953 in an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

"Given that they were able to sign this agreement, it will prove that U.S. remains to be a superpower and also this will give them the right, more leverage on how they will engage with North Korea diplomatically or economically", he said.

Given Kim only repeated vague commitments to pursue the "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", some experts questioned whether Trump was making excessive concessions.

Observers say the document lacks substance, in particular on how denuclearisation would be achieved.

"As the leader of the free world, we urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that those who paid the ultimate price for freedom during the Korean War are finally returned home", VFW head Keith Harman wrote.

University student Choi Soo-won, 23, said he has his hopes up as President Trump is an "unpredictable" figure, as is Kim.

While President Trump might be correct that his threat to rain "fire and fury" on the Korean Peninsula helped get Kim to the table (and perhaps persuaded Xi to cajole him there), the opportunity to convert that leverage into real denuclearization has been squandered.

At Seoul Station in the morning, busy passers-by stopped to watch the two leaders exchange the historic first handshake and opening remarks on television screens.

Trump acknowledged that the statement did not mention verifiable or irreversible denuclearization of the peninsula, but told reporters that he had discussed related measures with Kim and said the process "will be verified" by a combination of American and global observers, without providing further details.

On conservative Fox News and among Mr Trump's core supporters, the president was lauded for a historic diplomatic breakthrough. "For such a group that can not work things out through a normal process, the only way we are not deceived again is to pursue an "abnormal" way as Trump has done".

Republicans in Congress have been more measured.
