Sri Lanka skipper charged with ball-tampering by ICC

Sri Lanka skipper charged with ball-tampering by ICC

Going into Sunday's (NZ time) third day, the tourists were instructed to play with a different ball and the hosts were awarded a five-run penalty, as umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould ruled Sri Lanka had altered the condition of the ball during the West Indies' first innings.

Sri Lanka's cricketers refused to take the field on the third day of the second cricket Test against the West Indies at St. Lucia after umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar changed the ball, the worldwide media reported.

Sri Lanka had resumed play on day three on Saturday under protest after delaying the start and strongly denied they tampered with the ball in St. Lucia. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has now made a decision to charge Chandimal for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Cricket's governing body, the ICC, tweeted that any disciplinary issues would be addressed at the end of play.

"The team management has informed us that Sri Lankan players have not engaged in any wrongdoing during the ongoing Test match played between Sri Lanka and West Indies", a statement from SLC said.

Opening batsman Devon Smith anchored the innings with a painstaking 61 but it was the fifth-wicket pair of Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich whose stand of 78 runs wrested the initiative from the Sri Lankans. After another 40 minute delay, play finally began at 11.30am local.

At the close of play on Day 2, Windies were 118 for 2 in reply to the opposition's first-innings score of 253.

However it was after these deliberations that the Sri Lankans agreed to the change of ball and to continue playing. Although CEO Ashley de Silva is still in his job, the board has no office bearers at the moment because the previous administration's term had expired on May 31, before fresh elections could be held.

Following the drama on the third morning of the Test, SLC had released a statement backing its players.

Sri Lanka's team management refused to comment when approached directly.

Batting a second time, Sri Lanka closed on 34 for one.

Chandimal and co. took the field after a delay but the skipper was seen involved in a long discussion with the umpires before going off the field with his players again. In that instance, though, Pakistan forfeited the game and the match was awarded to England.
