‘Ashamed & humiliated’: Woman denied miscarriage medication by Walgreens pharmacist

Nicole Arteaga said a Walgreens pharmacist allegedly denied her medication necessary to end her pregnancy after her baby stopped developing, because it was against his ethics.

"The world felt like it was closing in, and I was thinking, like, this is my body and I'm losing control", Arteaga said.

Rather than have a surgical procedure to remove the fetal tissue from her uterus, Ms. Arteaga, a first-grade teacher who lives in Peoria, Ariz., decided on Wednesday to take misoprostol, a medication that can be used to end a failed pregnancy. "I can't give you this one, '" Arteaga said.

Arteaga said she and her husband have a 7-year-old son and have wanted another child.

The woman voiced her anguish on Facebook, and also left a negative review on the United States chain's Yelp page, with many people - particularly women - banding together to push to scrap the legislation. "And, looking back at those comments, it's nice to know that people understand the situation and what I'm going through", Arteaga said. "I couldn't control the fact that my body wasn't going to support this pregnancy, and I wanted this baby".

The pharmacist had asked the mom if she was pregnant, BuzzFeed reported, and when she said yes, he would not sell the meds to her. "I share this story because I wish no other women have to go thru something like this at time when you are vulnerable and already suffering". She is also concerned that the pharmacist could be denying women the right to birth control, the morning after pill or fertility drugs.

When she went to her local Walgreens to pick up her prescription, the pharmacist on duty refused to give it to her.

Arteaga said she spoke to a store manager "who did not seem happy about what had happened" and had also contacted Walgreens corporate office.

A woman says she was publicly shamed and left in tears after a chemist denied her prescription for miscarriage-inducing medicine for "ethical" reasons.

Walgreens said that the company policy actually allows pharmacists to step away from filling prescriptions for which they have personal objection.

'After learning what happened, we reached out to the patient and apologized for how the situation was handled. Walgreens says its pharmacists can make such choices, but they must refer the patient to another pharmacist on duty.

After a day of thinking, she opted to take the medication. According to her, Walgreens didn't reach out to her. Arteaga said she reached out to them.

In a statement quoted by CNN, Walgreens said they were investigating the incident "to ensure our patients' needs are handled properly".

"We're literally endangering people by stepping in, in these ways and that definitely is a huge concern", she said.

Arizona is one of six USA states with a "conscience clause" law that allows health care providers to refrain from assisting in abortion, abortion medication or emergency contraception. Finally, he offered to transfer the prescription to another pharmacy. The drugstore chain said in a statement that the employee had acted within company guidelines and Arizona law.

Arizona is one of six states that have passed laws allowing pharmacists to deny filling emergency contraception drug prescriptions on moral grounds.

"This post isn't something I generally do, but last night I experienced something no women should ever have to go thru especially under these circumstances or any other circumstances".
