Trump says he’ll announce Supreme Court pick July 9

According to the BBC, Trump plans on interviewing "one or two" of the potential nominees at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club over the weekend.

Still, a more conservative court may be more willing to chip away at abortion rights by upholding state restrictions that Kennedy and the four liberal justices would have been likely to strike down.

The president and Senate Republicans are moving quickly to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, despite protests from Democrats.

"We have to pick one that's going to be there 40 years, 45 years", Trump said at a rally on Thursday.

A key Democratic senator is encouraging President Donald Trump not to pick a Supreme Court nominee who's openly interested in overturning Roe v. Wade.

After he won the election, Trump continued to say the judges he would appoint would be "pro-life" judges and that if Roe was overturned, the question of abortion would be settled by individual states.

Among Trump's counselors is Leonard Leo, who is taking a leave of absence as executive vice president of the Federalist Society to serve as an outside adviser in the selection process.

Trump told reporters Friday he would not ask potential nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade. That judicial approach typically involves a more literal interpretation of the Constitution as compared to broader rulings such as Roe.

"I think it's going to be the early cutoff dates for abortion that you're gonna be seeing going up to the court that could challenge Roe v. Wade, because Roe v. Wade and its cases that have followed have made clear that before the time of fetal viability it's for the woman and her doctor to make the decision", Northup said.

Prominent on the list of possible successors are Judges Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, who was seriously considered for the seat eventually filled by Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh, who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington and is a former Kennedy law clerk. "And probably not. They're all saying, 'Don't do that, you don't do that, you shouldn't do that, ' but I'm putting conservative people on".

Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate, and it's even closer because of the absence of ailing Sen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said, "When you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you, and that's of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for years in this country".

Both sides are gearing up for a confirmation battle in the Senate after Trump names his nominee.

Collins appeared on ABC's "This Week" and CNN's "State of the Union", Leo spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Graham was on NBC's "Meet the Press".
