People urged to use water wisely as heatwave continues

The highest temperature recorded was 32 degrees Celsius at Shannon Airport in the West of Ireland last week.

"A hosepipe ban in place here in Northern Ireland means that customers really can not use a hosepipe for domestic-type purposes".

Similar water bans have also been introduced in Northern Ireland.

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A hose-pipe ban is to be extended to Galway later this week due to increased demand on the supply network. But they aren't setting out to catch people so they can fine or prosecute them during the water conservation period.

"In fairness, we have been contacted by Irish Water which acknowledged our demand that it goes past just issuing information via local radio or its websites and starts contacting its individual farmer-customers and letting them know what the situation is".

A hosepipe ban is on the horizon if hot weather continues, a water firm has warned.

"We are tankering water from larger schemes to top up reservoirs where levels are falling and trying to protect borderline supplies so as to protect water supply to homes and businesses".

"We thank everyone who has already taken action and we need a collective effort from the public to conserve water, and that behaviours change into the future as the threat to supplies remain beyond the current hot spell", she said. Restrictions are likely to be put in place this week unless the demand for water drops.

"We are really grateful for the measures that people have taken to conserve water so far and we hope that placing a Water Conservation Order (hosepipe ban) will make people more mindful of their responsibilities and the impact their water usage is having on their neighbours and communities".

Water companies are starting to ask customers to conserve supplies by not using hosepipes or water sprinklers during the heatwave.

The last hosepipe ban in the north was 23 years ago.

Elsewhere across the United Kingdom consumers are being urged to take simple steps to reduce the amount of water they use.
