Smartphone with a dual camera? How about 7 more?

The L16 finally has some specs now - the 16 cameras include five 28mm f/2 wide-angle lenses, five 70mm f/2 midrange lenses, and six 150mm f/2.4 telephoto lenses.

Camera manufacturer Light is reportedly working on a prototype phone with nine rear cameras, according to The Washington Post. 16 cameras, as you may have already thought to yourself, does seem like a little too much, which is why Light's new smartphone (of which we have only a single image) comes with nine cameras, with 8 arranged in a circular format around the primary camera. The multi-lens system is able to achieve good performance even with low-light conditions and it can apply depth effects thanks to several different sensors included. The company is pushing full speed ahead, though, and will reportedly be unveiling a first-of-its-kind smartphone that has as many as 9 cameras on the back.

There are less camera units on the phone equivalent but plenty of other tech inside. From Apple to Xiaomi, most smartphone makers are incorporating this feature in their phones. The camera is capable of taking 52MP photos, which are formed stitching together more than 10 perspectives. Then, that information is stitched together by an algorithm to create a high-resolution image that could theoretically rival a photo captured on a DSLR camera. Huawei has also introduced a version of this, called the P21 Pro, featuring three lenses which are utilized for monochrome, color, and zoom.

Just don't expect multicamera phones to be cheap.

That company is none other than Light, certainly no stranger to multi-camera systems on mobile devices, having put 16 lenses on its "multi-aperture computational" L16 camera, made available in July previous year.

Light didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
