China issues USA travel warning amid trade tensions

China is warning its citizens about traveling to the US this summer, citing damage to the pocketbook from America's high medical costs as well as personal safety.

The United States is "opening fire" on the world with its threatened tariffs, the Chinese government warned on Thursday, saying Beijing will respond the instant US measures go into effect as the two locked horns in a bitter trade war.

Several countries, including China and Canada, have expressed similar concerns.

China has said it will not "fire the first shot", but its customs agency made clear on Thursday that Chinese tariffs on US goods will take effect immediately after Washington's duties on Chinese goods kick in.

Brussels officials are looking to negotiate a new deal with the US President, who is a fierce critic of the EU's trade policy.

On June 15, the Trump administration said it would introduce additional 25-percent duties on 818 items of Chinese imports worth $34 billion on July 6. China's list is created to inflict pain on USA farmers and other groups that are important to President Donald Trump's political base.

"We put a halt on all investment, not just because we will be losing money, but because we don't know if growing in the United States is the right move if we won't be an exporting country", Ken Maschhoff, co-owner of the country's largest family-owned pork producer, told CNBC.

Concerns about the outbreak of a global trade war have, among other factors, prevented a sustained recovery in global stock markets since a violent sell-off knocked them off records highs in February.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that China is "fully prepared to take a package of necessary measures" to safeguard its national interests.

An outright trade war with the United States could hit China's export machine, with recent data pointing to fatigue as credit expansion slowed and domestic demand looked to be softening.

Still, China's stance is striking given Washington's deep economic and security ties with European nations.

Travel and Leisure magazine's report on the alert, meanwhile, noted that China has been warning its citizens about gun violence in the USA for years.

"Trump has split the West, and China is seeking to capitalize on that".

The global commercial order is being shaken by the Trump administration's use of an obscure U.S. trade-law provision on national security to justify steel and aluminium tariffs against a host of countries including defence allies.

However, China's offer at the upcoming summit to open up reflects Beijing's concern that it is set to face tighter European Union controls, and regulators are also blocking Chinese takeover attempts in the United States.

Therefore, to many, the trade war the USA sees intent on initiating is the country's strategy to keep China on the back foot so that it will not develop as fast as it otherwise would, and thus unable to challenge the dominant role of the U.S. in the global economic order.
