Trump says scandal-plagued EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has resigned

I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Despite Pruitt's blowing public money on everything from over-the-top security details to luxury fountain pens, it took till today for president Trump to announce Pruitt's resignation on Twitter.

Wheeler spent four years at the EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics during the George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations.

Pruitt was also among the Trump Cabinet officials who reportedly took charter flights and booked first-class tickets on the taxpayer dime.

But Mr Pruitt has been embroiled in allegations of ethics violations for months, including issues with his travel and security expenses and a condo arrangement. We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!'

Pres. Donald Trump announced Thursday on Twitter Pruitt would be resigning from the post, making Wheeler the newest chief of the almost 50-year-old agency.

On his state website, Pruitt described himself as "a leading advocate against the EPA's activist agenda".

Under Pruitt, the EPA reversed a ban on a pesticide that can harm children's brains, against the advice of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

He was also instrumental previous year in lobbying Trump to withdraw the United States from the global 2015 Paris climate accord to combat global warming.

Whole programs have also been cut or drastically shrunken, including the CO2-fighting clean power plan, stricter auto emission standards, and Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay restoration programs.

This comes as a series of ethics embarrassments have piled up for Pruitt throughout his tenure.

Under Pruitt, the EPA has lagged in collecting penalties from and punishing polluters, collecting fewer than half the penalty fees that EPA administrations under Obama, Bush, and Clinton did.

If you want to drag your jaw around your apartment floor for an hour, listen to Embedded's investigation of Pruitt.

"I look forward to the confirmation of the next head of the EPA".

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, of NY, said it's "time for new leadership at the EPA" after the resignation. Several have been struck down, including the rules on lead paint listed above. "Then, of course, you know, I saw who he's appointed as the interim, and that's reality for us", she said of Pruitt's replacement, his deputy at the EPA Andrew Wheeler. John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate environment panel, has praised Wheeler for sound environmental policies and said he "exemplified excellence in his professional endeavors", both in government and in the private sector.

The main difference between the two, say conservation groups, is Wheeler will likely be more effective than Pruitt in dismantling EPA safeguards. "But he's been around Washington a long time".
