Tropical Depression 2 forms in Atlantic Ocean, but don't fret

The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Depression Two formed Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean, northeast of French Guyana.

As of 5 p.m. ET Friday, Beryl had winds of 80 miles per hour and was moving to the west at 15 miles per hour. Caribbean islands in the Lesser Antilles will see hurricane impacts as the storm approaches late in the weekend. Major hurricanes pack wind speeds of at least 111 miles per hour (179 kph). Even with such a far distance to travel there is already a hurricane watch for portions of the Lesser Antilles.

Hurricane-force winds from the hurricane extend only 10 miles from the center, with tropical storm force winds stretching only up to 35 miles.

Some increase in showers and gusty winds are expected in the Lesser Antilles this weekend.

Another system, dubbed Invest 96L, now centered southwest of Bermuda has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression by the end of this week, according to the NHC.

Earlier this week, Colorado State University updated its forecast for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, lowering the number of named storms expected to 11, 4 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane.

The barrelling tropical storm caused more than £37million ($50million) in damage and claimed 12 lives as it moved up the USA coast in May.

There are some who have suggested that we are coming to the end of the current "Atlantic multidecadal oscillation" cycle that began in the 1990s.

Only 45 named tropical storms have formed in the first half of July from 1851-2017, for an average rate of one every 3.7 years.

Since small tropical cyclones like Beryl often have a tendency to strengthen quickly over a short period of time, some additional strengthening is forecast today.

Tropical Depression Two, in the lower right of this GOES-16 satellite image, is moving west toward the Caribbean.
