European specifications revealed for Suzuki Jimny Motors

The new Suzuki Jimny will also get a new cabin with all black interior and a well-equipped dashboard where the centre stage is taken by a larger SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system. Like its predecessor, the new Jimny is built on a ladder-frame chassis, but it now has additional crossmembers to increase rigidity.

More details about the forthcoming new Suzuki Jimny have been revealed, detailing European specifications for its new cute and small, but tough no-nonsense off-roader.

In SA, the Jimny is likely to be powered by a "newly developed" 1,5-litre petrol engine. Suzuki will be exporting only the latter to the export markets and it's the same motor that is also set to power the Indonesia-spec new-gen Suzuki Ertiga.

The engine will be paired to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Suzuki hasn't quoted any performance figures - but then the Jimny has never been about acceleration or top speed; it's about taking you to places very few other standard off-roaders can go, in more comfort than you'd expect, and bringing you safely home again. A ladder frame structure, three-link axle suspension and part-time four-wheel-drive from the "AllGrip Pro" system will make it a force to contend with on the muddy stuff. Other safety features include six airbags, hill hold and hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and selectable four-wheel drive with low-range.

The new SUV's design reflects its 4x4 status, taking influence from earlier Jimnys through the simple, box-shaped body, vertical grille and round headlamps with separate indicators. Ground clearance is 210mm.

At 3,645mm from the front bumper to the spare wheel cover the new Jimny is exactly the same length as before. However, the overall design remains chunky, with function favoured over form, to enable users to operate controls and buttons even while wearing gloves.

Coming to safety features, the vehicle gets front and side airbags, a seat belt reminder system for all occupants, radar-based collision assistant, high beam assist, lane departure assist and traffic sign recognition among others.

Inside, the auto comes with 377 litres of boot space - 53 litres more than in the last model - and all the materials used make it easy to maintain if it gets dirty.
