Suspected rhino poachers killed by lions in South Africa

It is not yet clear how many poachers were killed.

In what many would consider the ultimate karma, a group of suspected rhino poachers have met a grizzly death after being mauled to death by lions in a South African game reserve. At the same time, the handler heard a loud commotion coming from the lions, which she then suspected was the reasoning behind why the dog got her attention to begin with.

He further added that they had come heavily armed with hinting rifles and exes which they recovered and enough food to last them for several days.

In 2016, the reserve lost three rhinos when poachers got into the park, shot them dead and cut off their horns, but this time it was the poachers who came off second best.

Investigators searched by helicopter for evidence of additional poachers in the reserve but did not find anything.

Authorities believe the men entered the game reserve in the early hours of Monday; they were found dismembered the following day, the news agency reports.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender told The Herald Live that police are examining the rifles found at the scene to see if they have been used in other poaching crimes.

A veterinarian was required to tranquillise six lions so that the police could recover the remains, which included a head and other body parts, along with three pairs of shoes.

Over 7,000 rhinos have been killed and their tusks poached in the last decade, with nine killed just this year.

Fox has said that the reserve remains open notwithstanding the events earlier this week, AFP reported.

Local police forensic teams, assisted by Sibuya's Anti-poaching unit, are continuing the investigation with the aim to identify the bodies' remains. "We're not sure how many there were - there's not much left of them". They view rhino horn, which is worth more than gold or platinum, as a valuable commodity, like elephant ivory or drugs. All books with the reserve include an option Rhino Levy where the proceeds are donated to a fund fighting poaching.
