Starbucks to Eliminate Plastic Straws by 2020

They essentially look like sippy cup lids - regular plastic lids with a raised and slanted mouthpiece for customers to drink from.

Starbucks Starbucks announced on Monday that it will eliminate plastic straws from its products by 2020.

Instead, Starbucks announced in a press release, it will start using "strawless lids" and straws made from "alternative materials", such as paper or "compostable plastic".

Kevin Johnson, Starbucks president and CEO, called the move a "significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways".

The strawless lid, which features a raised lip, is already available in more than 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada for select beverages.

At Starbucks, executives said the efforts are part of a $10 million plan to develop cups and lids that are fully recyclable and compostable.

Other companies have been ditching plastic straws as bans on the item have gone into place. The transition will be complete in 2019, the company said.

Say goodbye to plastic straws at Starbucks.

A number of local governments have recently passed legislation restricting the use and distribution of plastic straws. McDonald's said earlier this year that it would stop using plastic straws at all of its stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Oakland and Berkeley, California, and other cities have also banned the use of disposable straws. Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the almost nine million tons of plastic waste that ends up in the water each year.

Starbucks says it will become the largest food and beverage retailer to commit to eliminating plastic straws, a change it says it will complete by 2020. Phased rollouts within the USA and Canada will then follow.
