Storm Strengthening To Hurricane Off Carolinas As Puerto Rico Faces Storm Beryl

The storm is forecast to come within 450 miles the west-northwest of Bermuda at noon on Wednesday, its closest point within the next 72 hours. Chris is not expected to move over the next two or three days as it develops into a hurricane and there are no coastal warnings or watches in affect, according to the NHC.

Chris formed off the coast of North Carolina on Friday and is now about 160 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras.

The next hurricane advisory is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday. It said Beryl will have maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and occasional higher gusts.

While the storm was not expected to make landfall as of Sunday afternoon, it will bring "life threatening" rough surf and unsafe rip currents along the East Coast, the weather service said. "Local amounts up to 5 inches are possible", the hurricane center said.

Tropical Storm Chris, which continues to linger off the North Carolina coast, is expected to become a hurricane on Monday.

"Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states into early next week", the NHC says. "Tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch areas of the Lesser Antilles by later today or Monday", forecasters said, "Strong gusty winds are also possible in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Monday".

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea.

Any of these passing showers or storms will be capable of producing periods of heavy downpours, rumbles of thunder and lightning and gusty winds up to 30-40 miles per hour.

About 7,000 houses and businesses in Puerto Rico still lack power after Hurricane Maria leveled an electricity grid that was ill-maintained before the storm.
