Roger Federer's play at Wimbledon should terrify tennis world

Roger Federer's play at Wimbledon should terrify tennis world

Federer defeated Mannarino 6-0 7-5 6-4 to reach the quarter-final of Wimbledon 2018.

Seventh seed Karolina Pliskova's defeat by Kiki Bertens means that for the first time in the Open era, there will not be a top 10 women's seed in the last eight of a Grand Slam.

So it's no wonder that Tsisipas, now 19 and one of the game's emerging stars, made a point of rewatching Federer's 2001 match against Sampras last week, the night before making his debut in Wimbledon's main draw.

Yet Federer quickly snuffed out the danger and broke in the next game before rounding off the match in typically ruthless fashion. "It was a really high quality match, I had to dig deep", Anderson said after the match.

The build-up to playing Federer will be a little quieter. But the 26-year-old underdog isn't ruling out an epic upset against Williams. It will be Djokovic's 41st appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal and he will start favorite against Nishikori who will be in his first last-eight at the All England Club.

The Spaniard denied Federer 9-7 in the final set of their epic Wimbledon final 10 years ago and the two living legends - who have shared the past six grand slam trophies in an extraordinary renaissance - are now only two wins each from another dream match-up on the sport's greatest stage.

That won't happen here, at least not this year, for Tsitsipas or Shapovalov.

"The overall goal is try to win the tournament". "These are the matches we work so hard for, me and my whole team". If you ask me if I prefer another (opponent), I say yes.

Victory for Nadal over his fellow left-hander would take him into a 35th Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Shapovalov's Wimbledon ended in the second round.

Kevin Anderson will face Roger Federer in the Wimbledon quarterfinals after Manic Monday produced a day of firsts for the South African.

It was tennis for the gluttonous: a feast.

The evergreen Swiss looks well on course to defend his title and claim a staggering ninth win on the famous grass courts in West London, with Rafael Nadal seemingly the only man capable of stopping him.

Federer came out firing in the opener and subsequently dismantled Mannarino in a bagel set that lasted just 16 minutes. The chair umpire intoned "Game, Federer" so frequently, it began to sound like the refrain of a song.

Federer lost a mere five points in the 16-minute opening set against Mannarino on Centre Court and saved his first break point of this year's Championships with an ace.

"The fact that it is the Centre Court, and the fact that it is a lot of people in the stands - it's not changing anything, actually". And he won the point 90 percent of the time he landed his first serve.

Was Mannarino intimidated by playing in that hallowed arena?

Federer was followed by Serena Williams, she of the seven Wimbledon trophies among her 23 majors, who was hardly challenged in a 6-2, 6-2 win against 120th-ranked qualifier Evgeniya Rodina of Russian Federation.

"I just had to go back to basics and hit as many balls as I can on the practice courts, just get that feel".

Nadal then plays Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

While the men get Tuesday off at Wimbledon, the women return for their quarterfinals.
