Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid to join Italian club Juventus

The 33-year-old Portuguese superstar is moving on in a massive transfer to Juventus of Italy's Serie A. On Tuesday, the much-speculated move became official and Ronaldo posted an open letter to fans on Real Madrid's site.

"For any player it would be great to play with someone like Cristiano Ronaldo", he said.

"The club (Juventus) had good contact with my agent for many years".

"Today Real Madrid wants to give thanks to a player who has demonstrated he is the best in the world and who marked one of the most brilliant periods in the history of our club and world football", the club said in a statement. In addition to that, Juve will have to pay the €100 transfer fee to Real Madrid.

This makes Juventus one of the favorites to win the Champions League next season, combining Ronaldo with Paulo Dyala and Gonzalo Higuain up. Italian media then reported that Juventus had put in a bid and Spanish sports daily Marca cited reports of Ronaldo looking for a home in Turin.

"I think that the moment has arrived to start a new chapter in my life and therefore I have asked the club to accept letting me leave".

Ronaldo, Madrid's all-time top goal scorer, has won the trophy four times during his nine years at the Bernabeu.

"In addition to the titles he won, Cristiano Ronaldo has been an example of dedication, work, responsibility, talent and determination", Madrid added.

Ronaldo, however, soured the celebrations immediately after the 3-1 win over Liverpool in the final in Kiev by indicating he had chose to leave, saying in a post-match interview "It was lovely to play for Real Madrid".

He helped Madrid to La Decima in the Champions League final with Atletico Madrid in 2014 and played a crucial role in Los Blancos winning the competition in each of the last three seasons. On an indifvidual level, as a Real Madrid player he has also won four Ballon d'Ors, two The Bests and three Golden Boots, among a host of other gongs. Ronaldo scored four goals to take his tally to 85 for his country and break Ferenc Puskas' record as Europe's all-time leading worldwide scorer.
